Buttermilk Falls

What is it about maps?  I’ve always loved them.  I can remember sitting in the back seat of my mom’s big 1980’s Buick and turning the pages of our U.S. Road Atlas, following the lines of different highways and interstates until I drifted to sleep on my sister’s shoulder.  Now I have a huge map hanging over my desk, which I stare at every day, hoping that no one ever finds a cure for my particular case of wanderlust.

On day two of our glamping weekend at Firelight Camps we got the most treasured kind of map there is….a hand drawn one! While our map-drawer explained his directions, my mind was suddenly trapped in a scene from Goonies with One-Eyed Willy’s treasure just within reach and Mama Fratelli on the chase.  Okay, so gold and fifty dollar bills weren’t at the end of this treasure hunt, but something pretty amazing was:  Buttermilk Falls. It’s one of over 100 waterfalls in the Ithaca area and dripping with scenery.  Hiker’s Tip:   When you get to King Road, take the Gorge Trail, not the Rim Trail.   It runs right along the waterfall.  You won’t be disappointed.
